James Tyrrell

James is a Senior Research Software Engineer in the Advanced Microscopy Facility, working with the Neuroinformatics Unit and other research partners to develop open-source software pipelines and tools for the neuroscience community.

Before joining the SWC in 2026, James was a research software engineer at the University of Birmingham and a software developer in industry. He holds a PhD in Applied Mathematics from the University of Birmingham. His thesis and associated research activity (supervised by Prof Rosemary Dyson and Prof David Smith) focused on the use of mathematical modelling to investigate complex biological phenomena such as the growth of pollen tubes in seed plants.

James also contributes to the wider RSE community through his role as a Trustee of the Society of Research Software Engineering, promoting collaboration between researchers and software experts and helping to deliver the annual UK RSECon.
