Q&A

How do internal states shape learning?

Decision-making offers a valuable window into the intricate ways internal states and internal models shape our behaviour. In a recent SWC Seminar, Professor Sami El-Boustani presented findings that elucidate the cognitive mechanisms underlying sensorimotor learning under varying motivational states.

Reimagining the role of the dorsal striatum

Traditionally, the dorsal striatum has been thought to play a critical role in learning and selecting adaptive actions. However, recent research suggests that the dorsal striatum's contribution to action selection may be derived from its involvement in motivation. In this Q&A, SWC Seminar speaker Dr David Robbe shares his key findings and highlights how the dorsal striatum’s motivational function is relevant to understanding brain disorders such as Parkinson’s.

Neuroscience career journeys - Aquatics Manager

Joe Higgins, Aquatics Research Facility Manager at SWC, has designed a specialised research facility and led the design and construction of a custom tidal aquarium to house fiddler crabs—a species the team is studying to unlock insights into brain function, specifically spatial navigation. We spoke with Joe about his career in aquatics and his advice for anyone wanting to work in neuroscience.

Hopfield, Hinton, and Hassabis: 2024 Nobel laureates shaping neuroscience

In a remarkable turn of events this year, artificial intelligence discoveries were awarded two Nobel prizes in two days. While the prizes were in Physics and Chemistry, the Nobel laureates—Professor Geoffrey Hinton, Professor John Hopfield and Sir Demis Hassabis among others—have all made discoveries that are shaping neuroscience. At the Sainsbury Wellcome Centre (SWC), these advances are having a transformative impact on our research.

The science of wakefulness

Most animals on Earth, even those without a brain, sleep. Yet the functions of slumber remain controversial and its molecular mechanisms have been elusive. In this Q&A, Professor Hiroki Ueda, based at the University of Tokyo and RIKEN, describes his work which found that calcium signalling, known to control diverse functions in the body, also regulates sleep.
