Senior Research Fellow

Loukia Katsouri studies the molecular mechanisms of tau propagation in Alzheimer’s disease. She aims to understand how the presence of tau is affecting the spread and the severity of the disease. Loukia is employing biochemical, molecular, and histological techniques and additionally she is using viral vectors, and pharmacological interventions to prevent aggravation of pathology and cognitive impairment in Alzheimer's disease mouse models.

Loukia is also investigating how tau propagation affects the hippocampal circuit, using extracellular electrophysiological recordings in freely moving animals during behavioural tests to understand how memory impairment is progressing in Alzheimer’s disease mouse models.

These findings will provide valuable knowledge on how and why tau causes neuronal death and delineate the initial pathological events of Alzheimer’s disease, with the ultimate goal of finding a cure for the disease.
